Klaus review: Correctly hyped

Last Christmas (I gave you my heart) I was recommended by a coworker to watch the Netflix movie Klaus as apparently it’s become a staple in his yearly Christmas traditions to watch the film along with other classics like Elf, The Grinch, etc.

Quite a large amount of praise to be putting a film in the same category as the tried-and-true Christmas film catalogue people have those times of year, so I added it to my list 4 months ago and forgot about it until last weekend.

This movie does NOT disappoint. The animation style and voice acting alone makes it worth the watch with big names I immediately recognised like Norm McDonald and J.K. Simmons, with my girlfriend recognising Joan Cusack. The theming and stylised town of ‘Smeerensburg’ is amazing and a breath of fresh air after watching the admittedly bland cookie-cutter art direction of Pixar’s Hoppers that I had the displeasure of watching in cinemas the day prior.

The story itself passed the 6 laugh test, but also managed to make myself well up with tears with my girlfriend crying during the sadder moments.

The transformation of the town brings a homely and cozy feeling perfect for the Christmas season, which only makes me envious of the future me who’ll be watching this again come Christmas time.
